Work permit for abused spouses

If you came to the U.S. as the spouse of someone in A, E-3, G or H status and that spouse abused you, Form I-765V asks USCIS for a work permit in your own name. It lets you work for a limited time; it doesn’t change or extend your immigration status.

Requirements

What you have to show

Who it’s for

  • The spouse, or former spouse, of a person admitted in A, E-3, G or H status, who came to the U.S. with them or joined them later, and who was abused by that spouse.

Evidence

  • Proof of your status and your spouse’s, your marriage, your identity and nationality, and the abuse, plus two identical passport-style color photos.
  • If you can’t get a document, a signed statement explaining why, with other credible evidence.

Renewals

  • To renew, your spouse must still hold valid status on the date you file, and you include your earlier work permits.

The steps

How the case runs

  1. Gather your evidence

Proof of both statuses, the marriage, your identity, and the abuse.

  2. File Form I-765V

    With your photos and evidence.

  3. A decision, then your card

If approved, USCIS issues an employment authorization document for a limited time.

How it works

How your petition gets built

  1. You answer simple questions

In English, Spanish, or Portuguese. The software puts your answers on the official USCIS forms.

  2. Your packet comes together

Your evidence is sorted into a numbered exhibit index, and your packet is checked for completeness.

  3. You file it

Download the assembled packet and file it yourself — or have an independent licensed attorney review and file it for you.

Pricing

What it costs

Your exact technology fee depends on your petition type and is shown during the free eligibility check, before you pay anything. USCIS filing fees are set by the government and paid by you directly to USCIS when you file, not at checkout.

Questions

Common questions

Need help affording your case? Contact our support team to ask about humanitarian discounts. Each request is reviewed by our team. USCIS filing fees go to the government, never to us, and your check shows exactly what applies to your case.

Who qualifies for a humanitarian petition?

These paths cover VAWA, T and U visa, asylee green card, and special immigrant juvenile cases. Answer a few simple questions in the free check and it tells you whether your situation fits one of them.

Is it safe to put my information here?

Your data is encrypted in transit and at rest. We never sell it or send it to USCIS, and it goes only to the service providers that make the product work. You decide when and how to file, and you can delete your account and data at any time.
