Processing times

How long USCIS takes is a moving number that depends on your form and your service center. Here is how to read it.

How to read them

Four things to know about processing times

  1. USCIS publishes them, per form and per office

The official processing times tool shows how long recent cases took for your form at your service center. It is the source worth trusting — check your form there.

  2. The number is a look backward, not a promise

Published times describe cases that recently finished. Your case is filed into the future, so treat every number as a range, not a date.

  3. The same form moves at different speeds

Service centers carry different workloads, so one form can take twice as long in one office as another. This is why we do not print one number on every page.

  4. Complete filings move; incomplete ones wait

A Request for Evidence stops the clock while you answer it. The single thing in your control is filing complete — which is exactly what the software checks before your packet is marked ready.

Your free eligibility check includes the current typical timeline for a case like yours, alongside your forms and government fees.

A median means half of cases finished faster and half slower — nationally, across every office. Your own office can run faster or slower than the median, which is why the official per-office tool is still the number to check before you plan around a date.

The lookup

Which form to look up for your petition

The official tool asks for a form, not a petition. Here is the translation — look up each form your case includes, at the official USCIS tool.

USCIS is the only official source for this data. The medians above are its official national history, carried here with their date — and the per-office tool is where the current number for your office lives.
